Art Installation Weesp, Netherlands

In this collaboration, Lorena Fernandez created five paintings for a 5 Rhythms workshop in the Netherlands. The workshop was organized in 2019 by Jup Jansunious (a.k.a. Doctor Dance), Mirjam van Hasselt and Tammy Burstein from New York. Each painting is related to a rhythm and a stage of life: Infancy, childhood, puberty, maturity, and old-age/death. Gabrielle Roth created the 5Rhythms approach to movement in the late 1970s. There are now 5Rhythms teachers worldwide who use her approach in their work. “Do you have the discipline to be a free spirit?” ~G. Roth

“Childhood is a time in which one discovers personal capability and strength. This often involves a lot of frustration, exploration of physical strength, and also the strength of character and boundaries. This is why it seems very appropriate to have here the fire, the anger, and the heart. It is the child’s right to express those in the face of injustice. It is the masculine part of the self.” Lorena
STACCATO CHILDHOOD. FATHER. FIRE. HEARTH. ANGER.

“Painting about the chaos of puberty reminded me about the growing pains of turning into an adult. It is a time of self-discovery, of falling backward, of tears, and of great strength to keep on living and fixing mistakes and overcoming challenges.” Lorena
CHAOS PUBERTY. SELF. WATER. MIND. SADNESS.

“In this circle of dancers, I included a shaman who was first seen in the caves of Trois Frères in France, dating from 10,000 BCE. The cave painting of ‘The Sorcerer’ is an amalgamation of various animals and a human. Putting her in my painting felt like being linked personally to the beginning of humanity. It lets me feel that we are one and have been one across time.” Lorena
LYRICAL MATURITY. TRIBE. AIR. SOUL. JOY.

“To me, this work is about my own very last days on Earth and after. Once I complete my time here as a human, I will rejoin the larger picture, the universe. So, it is a time to move on to larger things. Dust to stardust.” Lorena
STILLNESS. OLD AGE. DEATH. SPACE. SPIRIT. COMPASSION. REJOINING THE UNIVERSE.
